His Excellency Ban Ki-moon Secretary-General
United Nations
1 United Nations Plaza
New York, New York 10017-3515
July 2007
Dear Mr. Secretary-General,
I am writing you in support of Taiwan’s bid to join the United Nations and to recommend that actions be taken promptly in favor of Taiwan’s participation in this organization.
Article 4 of the U.N. Charter states that “Membership in the United Nations is open to all other peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able and willing to carry out these obligations.” Taiwan clearly satisfies these requirements as exemplified through its extraordinary achievements in economic development and democratization. Your rejection of Taiwan’s application would only appear going against U.N.’s divine principles.
More importantly, your statement that the so-called “one China policy” dictated by resolution 2758 inevitably disqualifies Taiwan’s membership is absolutely unfounded. For the past century, Taiwan has been steadfastly making her own history, one that boasts an ethnic, cultural, historical, political diversity entirely distinct from that of People’s Republic of China. Taiwan has now become a mature democracy with dynamic free market and vibrant civil society. Taiwan has always been a sovereign state and is not part of China, which is still an authoritarian communist country.
I would also like to draw your attention to the plight of the freedom-loving Taiwanese for whom only the feelings of isolation, fragmentation, and rejection are engendered by the failure of the U.N. to grant them their merited seat in this great organization. Taiwan’s exclusion from the U.N. would only leave the citizens of Taiwan unprotected by the World Health Organization, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and so on and so forth.
It is therefore my sincere hope, along with the hopes of 23 million people in Taiwan, that this travesty will be resolved this year so the United Nations can truly live up to its promises of bringing peace, freedom, democracy and human rights to the people all over the world.

Yours truly,
